The last firmware update for iPhone 3G was 4.2.1 and that probably explains why there's that little 1% of iUsers still on iOS 4. I'm actually majorly surprised that apple decided to write iOS6 for the iPhone 3GS. It might not have the features, such as 3D maps and other features but since they haven't killed off the iPhone 3GS like they did with the iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 i've got to give respect for apple for giving a 3 year old phone another life to live. There's not many phones out there that are 3 years old still getting updates heck even android phones don't even support a year for updates.
I remember the galaxy S1 I9000 not recieveing an update to ice cream sandwich even though custom roms were built and they worked amazingly well. If you remember the galaxy S1 was critically acclaimed by almost everybody, everybody loved what samsung did and how they can make a flag ship android phone that hasn't different accessories or pherphicarls. The specifications of the galaxy S1 were the same if not better than the original galaxy nexus and the nexus was retrieving an update to ICS. Not sure why because there's a mass market for the S1 and there should have been no discussion about bringing ICS to the S1.
This brings me to the subject of the stats have how many people are on different versions of android, causing the developes to have a hard time developing for any platform because they don't know which operating system version is capable. Most developers are smart enough these days to only develop for gingerbread (2.3) and above.
Only 6% of android users have actually upgraded to the latest version of android, which is ice cream sandwich, if you have a look at the picture at the below it will show how fragmented the android operating system is.
The developers again have a very very hard time due to the different screen sizes and the different screen resolution. They don't know if it's going to be a 3.5 inch screen or a 4.8. With apple they've made it easy for developers to create an app since the all the iPhone/iPod screen is 3.5 inch screen. All the iPhones were the same screen resolution until they brought out the gorgeous retina display on the iPhone 4.
Thanks for reading.

i suspect they might keep 3GS going when the 'new iPhone' is launched in Sept/Oct and have it really cheap/free etc. hence keeping it updated. early reports are it is faster than iOS5 just a shame the hardware doesn't support some of the new features. There are probably many android phones that are still low spec hardware to keep them really cheap so they run android smartphone software but wouldn't get the latest version. Most people i work with who have an android handset have no idea what they are using or if they can upgrade or not. One who has put ICS on and loads of things don't work for him now..maybe he did it wrong though.
ReplyDeleteiOS6 is pretty nice overall and seems fairly fast with some nice new features.
I don't know where M/Soft are going with Windows8 phone OS as their windows phone hardware out even this week will not run the new OS. it will need all new hardware for it so a long take up before it sells massive volumes of WP8 handsets?
